I think Byzantine history is absolutely fascinating. I’m interested in numismatics and lately I’ve started to acquire Byzantine era coins. It led me down quite the rabbit hole and it’s become my new favourite subject.

Short Answer: Muslim Long Answer: East and West Catholic Church split. And as Medieval era slowly declining so does Constantinople. When Mehemet II conquer Constantinople and change it Istantbul. The West quickly reject East Rome.

Roman Empire was mediterranean empire not European Slavic, German and Scandinavian they destroyed the empire While Egyptian Levantine North African were the most important part of the Roman Empire and there’s a lot of Roman emperors were Arab and Semitic (Aramaic Syriac and Phoenician) or partly Arab Even when Arab control the land from China to France They didn’t destroy the Byzantium (eastern Roman ) actually they translate all the Greek philosophy and Latin manuscript Till the central Asian Turk arrived to the Middle East with the German/French crusader And destroyed both the Byzantium and Arab empires Even the Ottoman when controlled the Byzantine empire they called themselves as sultan of Rüm which means the Roman Emperor

Ricimir was an excellent ruler. While the Roman elites watched the empire become a Germanic mess, he won countless battles. He forced the capital to invest in the frontier and was shrewd diplomat, ruling behind the throne but is written like a villain since he forced the elites to spend money on the state. Majorian gave tax cuts to earn his good name before his incompetence got him killed.

1:55 what’s always interested me (and what I feel like has never been discussed), is that the ottomans were weakening as a world power in the 17-1800s, but that’s also the time period in which ottoman culture became more widespread in Europe. Part of it is probably just that I was born after 2000 and so have never lived in a time when even a memory of Turkish power existed, but the place of “the Turk” in European politics and culture in the long 17th century has kind of fascinated me the last few weeks. It’s so hard to explain what I mean specifically, so hopefully I’ve gotten my point across

Slight nitpick: 'Caesar' is third declension, so the nominative plural of 'Iulius Caesar' (which we use to reference the stirpes of the gens to which he belonged) should be 'Iulii Caesares' rather than 'Iulii Caesarii (as the nominative plural is the word stem plus -es in the third declension masculine and feminine).

Sufyan was main enemy of Prophet ﷺ , leader of idolaters (mushrikin), he lead their army against Muslims in Battle of Uhud and Battle of Trench, and he, as well as his son Muaviya, became a Muslims only after surrender of Mecca, with little choice left. Yet among Arabs it was considered too shameful to directly lie even against enemy. Another ruler who considered Prophet ﷺ to be truthful awaited "Paraclete", as described in Gospels, was Negus of Ethiopia, and he gave early Muslim refugees a shelter. So Negus and his kingdom kept in tact for 1400 years, until Muslims became too weak to shelter Christian Ethiopia against fascist Italy in 1936

Yet, the genetics (y-DNA E1b1), language (Sudanic or Afrisan), Osteology (Africoid), hair texture, geography (Africa) and roots (Nabta Playa in East Sahara) point to the civilisation as native African

I think part of it was that the Habsburgs saw the Holy Roman Emperor as the true successors to Rome. Another thing was that Enlightenment rationalists and secularists saw Byzantium as an example of the divine right monarchies they disliked. Also some French Republicans were more interested in the Roman Republic, rather than the empire, though Napoleon felt differently.

Mehmet II declared himself as the “Emperor of Romans” after conquering Constantinople in 1453. Hapsburg Frederick III was also calling himself the Emperor of Romans.” Hapsburgs found a solution to this problem by making up a name as “Byzantine Empire” for the real Roman Empire whose seat was in Constantinople. Holy Roman Empire headed by the Hapsburgs was the imposter: it was neither holy nor Roman.

Man, those doctrinal debates like the Filoque one seem so strange in modern times. They are literally debating an unfalsifiable question, if there is no conceivable way to check where does the holy spit originate from then why does it even matter? How many angels can dance on a head of a pin? Who cares, it’s unfalsifiable, so it’s not even worth thinking about. I’m so glad I was born after we came up with the scientific method and with empiricism.

I think it makes sense to say the eastern empire became Byzantium with the ascension of Heraclius. A new dynasty is established out of a provincial governor. They stop trying to reconquer the western territories. Their primary threat shifts from Iran to the Arabs. And shortly thereafter, the western empire is restructured under foreign rulers with no Roman heritage. The Roman Empire was The Empire. The Byzantine empire was just one power amongst a multitude.

  • @HolyknightVader999

If I were to venture a guess, it's because there were scant few conquests during the Byzantine period. It was mostly them stabbing each other in the back, then losing more land, then stabbing each other in the back and losing more land. The Turks invaded Anatolia in 1071 because the Byzantine Emperor who hammered out a perfectly reasonable compromise treaty with them was deposed and replaced by a new emperor who tore up the treaty and wouldn't pay the Turks their bribe money. The Crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204 because the Byzantine Emperor whom they were allied with was killed, and the new emperor ordered the Byzantine army to attack them.

Nonsense history, next video he will probably say that the Russians invented the double headed eagle, and the next one we will hear that the Slavic people brought the civilisation to Europe! Double headed eagle was used widely throughout the Balkans by the Illyrian tribes who habited the southern Europe prior to Greeks the romans and the later Byzantine empire, there is plenty of evidence crafted on stones but all of that evidence excludes the Russians and their side of history! Also Russia isn’t the only country that uses double headed eagle on their flag, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia also use the double headed eagle!

The west always had an inferiority complex towards Byzantine thought. If it wasn't for the fall of Constantinople and the Italian renaissance (brought to you by Byzantine scholars and thought leaders leaving from the conquered empire) the west would still believe in Wotan and sacrifice children and virgins. It is poetic for the student to try to discredit the teacher. To try to saw the branch you are sitting on.
